Academy Details for
Northern & Rural Regions
The Academy for Washoe County and rural agencies runs for 8 weeks, with 4 weeks of in-person classroom learning alternating with 4 weeks of job shadowing and field training with your respective child welfare agency. The classroom sessions are hosted at the University of Nevada, Reno Redfield Campus.

​Week 1 - Classroom Learning (Mon-Fri)​
Topics may include: Self-care, Overview of Child Welfare Practice in Nevada, Role of Culture, Drug Identification and Indicators of Use, Identification of Maltreatment, Intro to Motivational Interviewing, Worker Safety, Intro to the Safe Model, and Quality Parenting Initiative

Week 2 - On-the-Job Training (OJT) with your agency

Week 3 - Classroom Learning (Mon-Fri)
Topics may include: Interviewing Children, Court, Present Danger Assessment, Removal, Placement, Visitation, and the Nevada Initial Assessment (NIA)

Week 4 - On-the-Job Training (OJT) with your agency
​
Week 5 - Classroom Learning (Mon-Fri)
Topics may include: Substantiation, Safety Plan Determination and Conditions for Return, Confirming Safe Environments and Quality Child Contact, Panels with Forster Parents and Youth, Motivational Interviewing, Permanency

Week 6 - On-the-Job Training (OJT) with your agency

Week 7 - Classroom Learning (Mon-Fri)
Topics may include: intensive learning and practice with the Protective Capacity Family Assessment (PCFA) and the Protective Assessment Progress Assessment (PCPA), the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA)
